More than one in five people in the UK have a disability, so it's essential that your digital estates are fully accessible.

One in six people worldwide experience disability. If you’re not designing for everyone, you’re missing out.

What is web accessibility?

Accessible design places every human, regardless of physical ability or impairment, at the centre of every product, device and service. Beyond the context of legal compliance, maintaining an accessible digital estate is integral to providing great user experiences.

Digital accessibility is measured against the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG). These are written by the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C). We are members of W3C, while our co-founder and head of accessibility, Alastair Campbell, is both a co-chair and key writer of the guidelines.

Recent UK government legislation states all public sector websites and apps must be accessible and feature an accessibility statement. Take our Accessibility Assessment to see how accessible your organisation is.

The benefits of investing in your organisation’s web accessibility

An estimated 16% of people experience significant disability worldwide. Investing in more accessible products and services opens them up to a whole new audience. That’s a potential 1.3 billion more people.

Leading the field of digital accessibility for over two decades, here are some of our top tips:

  • Building with accessibility in mind early in a project can be up to 40 times cheaper than fixing it after a product launch
  • The Purple Pound (the spending power of people with disabilities in the UK) is estimated to be around £270 billion every year
  • Building more accessibly also sends a clear signal to your users that you care and builds brand trust and loyalty
  • You are more likely to attract and retain talent by building accessibility and inclusive design into your processes as well as building your own internal accessibility and inclusivity

Why is digital accessibility important?

Ethically, accessible design places people at the centre of every product, device or service, regardless of physical ability or impairment. A great digital user experience cannot exist without considering accessibility.

Legally, compliance is becoming more of a focus both nationally and internationally. Accessible standards are only expected to be enforced further in future. Recent UK and EU legislation states that the majority of websites, apps and even physical products must be accessible.
